Mill Creek Trail, The classic “Mill Creek”, once a simple access road connecting Vail Ski Resort to neighboring trails, has undergone a dramatic transformation. Originally an old service road for hikers and riders to connect to neighboring trails, it now stands as a prime example of a trail that blends both history and modern design, offering a truly unique experience.
In collaboration with the National Forest Service and the Vail Valley Mountain Trail Alliance (VVMTA), MTF took on the monumental task of reimagining this trail’s alignment and purpose. The goal was clear: to craft a trail that embodied the spirit of classic backcountry singletrack, while also incorporating the smooth, flowy characteristics that today’s riders and hikers crave.
MTF walked a fine line between creating a machine-built trail that feels timeless and raw—almost as if it had been there for centuries—and introducing a modern flow, as landscapes allowed, that enhances sustainability and fun. The result is a trail that feels natural, but with a new-age edge.
Riders and hikers alike will enjoy sections of effortless flow, seamlessly winding through the thick forest, before encountering raw, challenging stretches that require focus and skill. The mix of smooth and rugged terrain offers something for everyone, whether you're seeking a relaxing ride or an exhilarating challenge.
At the top of the trail, you’re rewarded with an unforgettable view above the East Vail Chutes. From this lofty vantage point, the landscape stretches out in every direction, providing a sweeping vista that is nothing short of mesmerizing.
Mill Creek Trail is no longer just a way to get from one place to another—it’s a destination in itself, offering a thrilling, backcountry experience that will leave you wanting more. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a casual explorer, this trail offers a little bit of everything and is most certainly worth the visit!
